Adam Gilchrist was born in Bellingen, New South Wales, on 14 November 1971. An outstanding wicketkeeper-batsman, he made his first-class cricket debut for New South Wales in 1993, before moving to Western Australia in 1994 to play for the Warriors.
In 1996 he made his one-day international debut against South Africa, before playing his first Test for Australia in 1999. In 2004 he captained Australia to a historic series victory in India - the first there in 35 years.
He retired from international cricket in 2008, after playing 96 Tests and 287 ODIs for Australia.
