After graduating at the top of his class at Harvard in 1998 with awards in science and creative writing, Mason spent a year studying malaria on the Thai-Myanmar border before beginning medical school in San Francisco. He graduated in 2003.
Daniel Mason's first novel was the critically acclaimed The Piano Tuner. His second was A Far Country.
