Les Murray is one of the finest poets now writing in English. His work is celebrated for his ability to combine the high European artistic tradition with Australia's more vernacular culture. He has won every major Australian literary award, including the Grace Leven Prize, the Petrarch Prize, the TS Eliot Award and the CJ Dennis Prize for Poetry in the Victorian Premier's Literary Awards. In 1997 he was awarded the TS Eliot Prize for the best collection of poetry published in the English language, while in 2000 he was awarded the Queens Gold Medal for Poetry on the recommendation of Ted Hughes. His 1998 verse novel, Freddy Neptune, was hailed in Britain and America as a masterpiece of twentieth century literature.
