Brian Payton has written for the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, and Boston Globe. He is the author of the novel Hail Mary Corner, a debut Canada's Globe & Mail declared "packs a cathartic wallop". His second book, Shadow of the Bear: Travels in Vanishing Wilderness, is a work of narrative nonfiction published internationally and chosen as a Barnes and Noble Book Club Pick, an NPR Pearl's Pick, and a Book of the Year (U.S. National Outdoor Book Awards). The Ice Passage: A True Story of Ambition, Disaster, and Endurance in the Arctic Wilderness, was longlisted for the 2010 National Award for Canadian Nonfiction and was a finalist for the 2010 Hubert Evans Nonfiction Prize. His latest book, The Wind is Not a River, was published in 2014. Payton lives with his family in Vancouver.
