Matthew Scarlett grew up in Geelong, Victoria. Eldest son of former Geelong player John Scarlett, he seemed almost destined to become one of the club's most valuable players. Playing fullback from 1997 up until his retirement at the end of the 2012 season, he was instrumental in Geelong's premiership wins of 2007, 2009 and 2011. Scarlett was the recipient of the Carji Greeves club champion medal in 2003, and has been named an All-Australian six times.
