The female physique has long been the subject of photographic art, but a turn in the last few years has been to focus on the male body instead. Naked Desire is 128 pages of full colour male art portrait and physique photography, with very little writing allowing the photographs to speak for themselves.
Naked Desire is a selection of photographs with a common theme - natural men, not models, who are challenging themselves by being photographed by a stranger without the protection that clothes provide. It is about trust, vulnerability, honesty and desire.
The work is high contrast, integrating the model into a setting that complements them, with many lit only by natural light. Angles, symmetry and location are vital. It is about exploring and exposing the natural beauty of regular men.
The author says: We are all born naked, we are all naked beneath our clothes, so why does nudity cause so much concern, shame and fear? For centuries nudity has been displayed in art as a thing of beauty rather than the villain many in society today try to claim it is.
David Khan is a former geneticist who abandoned his never-ending PhD after five years to follow his dream of doing something a little more creative. Following a stint in movie making he settled on editing, photography and design, returning to study at RMIT to hone his skills. This is the first book of his photography and he presented his first exhibition as part of Melbourne's Midsumma festival 2009.
