Macmillan publish our books in three formats: Online, Adobe Ereader (AER or PDF), & EPUB. AERs match the layout of the printed page and are particularly useful for books with graphics and illustrations where layout is key. EPUBs are a reflowable ebook format where the reader can resize text so that it reflows over a greater or lesser number of pages. These formats work best for pure text narrative titles. EPUB is the standard format for trade ebooks.
You can read ebooks using a personal computer, mobile devices, and dedicated ereaders.
Different devices support different eformats and DRM (digital rights management, the technology publishers use to control the printing, copying and sharing of ebooks). Ereaders traditionally use Eink screens which allow you to read without eyestrain as the resolution is better than on a computer or mobile screen. The most notable ereaders at the moment are:
Amazon's Kindle
Kobo's Touch, Aura and Arc
Sony's Reader
Apple's iPad and iPhone
Google's Nexus
Samsung's Galaxy
Barnes & Noble's nook launched in Nov 2009 but is not yet available in Australia.
You can purchase ereaders directly from all these retailers and purchase our ebooks from their associated ebookstores:
Google Play
iBookstore
Kindle
Kobo
Sony
Our ebooks are also available from any of the suppliers listed on our ebook retailers page.
There are lots of different options. You can buy ebooks from this website, or the Macmillan Digital website, or any of the suppliers listed on our ebook retailer page. Just search for a title or author, choose your book, select the appropriate digital format and
pay on the shop website.
The price of an ebook is in related to the lowest priced book currently selling in print, i.e. if the hardback is available, the ebook will be sold in line with the hardback price; as soon as the paperback comes on to the market the ebook will be sold in line with the paperback price. Our ebook pricing may change as this emerging marketplace changes.
Pan Macmillan Australia would like to publish every title it releases as a print book in ebook format, and it is our policy to do so, but there are a variety of reasons we may not have a title available:
The author may not yet have given us permission to publish their book electronically
The title may have numerous illustrations, quotes or graphics and we must purchase the legal permissions for the use of every diagram, quote or graphic in electronic format. For some books the permissions are simply too costly
Technical difficulties have delayed the release of a title for a small amount of time after the print release as problems occured either during conversion to the ebook format or when being distributed to different ebook retailers
The title is an older one published before 2006 and is still being considered for ebook publication under our backlist digitisation program
We already have our range of Macquarie Dictionaries available as apps on iTunes and always consider which of our individual titles could be developed as apps but we are unlikely to develop our own app store for ebook sales. Click here to see the Macquarie Dictionary apps on iTunes.
Macmillan will resupply corrupted, incomplete or incorrectly supplied ebooks through www.macmillandigital.com.au if notified within 48 hours of purchase. We will not resupply an ebook that has been lost due to system failure, accidental deletion or other causes beyond our control. It is your responsibility, once supplied, to ensure the security and integrity of the ebook files, within the limitations of the licence granted on purchase of the ebook.
